Being boastful==

The article I wrote for the Star Ole BRATs, with edited parts...I think.==

Truly Malaysian

by Soh Zhi Min

It’s that time of the year again… when you see the Jalur Gemilang hung outside houses and buildings. You see it fluttering on cars. And of course, you see energetic young Malaysians wave the flag excitedly as they usher in Aug 31. Yes, these are the usual elements that make up the Merdeka mood.

But wait! We don’t seem to be getting much of that this year.

There is little of the usual outpouring of patriotism this year, even as Merdeka fast approaches. By now, we would all be discussing our trip to Dataran Merdeka, or getting the Jalur Gemilang out as we prepare to fly it high.

The media would be full of news, pictures and footages of people proclaiming their love for the country, and how excited they are about celebrating the nation’s Independence Day. There would usually be Merdeka sales everywhere.

However, this year things have been rather quiet compared to previous years.

There won’t even be the usual Merdeka parade this year because of A(H1N1) fears. Besides, it is also the fasting month for Muslims.

Does that mean we have become any less patriotic?

Why do we celebrate Merdeka? It is just to relish a public holiday, or to have an excuse to put up a parade. Is it just simply to celebrate our independence. Remember how past leaders fought to release this land from foreign hands? Remember how independence was attained from the British? Remember when our people came together not as Malays, Chinese and Indians but as Malaysians, to take back what was rightfully ours? Merdeka Day serves as a reminder. It tells us how through, unity, determination and passion, we can achieve anything.

So, it actually does not take much to celebrate Merdeka... the only vital thing is your patriotic spirit. You don’t need flowery floats, extravagant events or huge posters to show your love for the country.

On the contrary, those things do not prove your loyalty to the country. It’s the effort and commitment you put in for your country.

It’s not about spilling your blood in warzones. It’s just about being willing to do your best for the country. Even if you’re away in another country, you could still celebrate Merdeka.

Merdeka is not a one-day celebration. August 31 is a significant day, but shouldn’t we be celebrating our country’s independence everyday? Be grateful that we live in a country free from colonisers, even with all its imperfections.

Be happy that we wake up to the sounds of cars honking and not bombs exploding. Be proud to see “Made in Malaysia” labels on the products we purchase. All these are simple things, little actions. Yet, it shows something deeper. You don’t need to chant Merdeka to celebrate our independence, you just need to be appreciative of it.

Even if the celebrations are not as grand this year as before, it does not mean our love for the country has dwindled.

Merdeka day after all is one to celebrate our independence and the course of events that follow after.

And if one is grateful for the Malaysian slang we hear everyday, the many varieties of food we savour each day and happy with our fellow countrymen, then one is celebrating Independence. Then, one is truly, proudly a Malaysian.

Happy Independence Day.

Have You No Shame?

You imbecile, you moron, you useless piece of human fat.

I can't be believe I'm related to you, ANY of you for that matter ><.

I've always questioned your sanity but then, what's there to question? You are a certified lunatic. Yet, amazingly, you're not in an asylum and I have to put up with you EVERY single tormenting day!

And, then when YOU come back and see what's happened to my door, you would probably regret not letting me go out now would you??? Then maybe my door would still be scar-free.

Ish, asking you for something is always so aggravating. First, comes the questions...then the nagging, the long telling-off. And you ask why I don't talk to you? Hah. Annoyance. And it's pretty obvious you just don't want me to go, stop coming up with different reasons everytime.

I suddenly feel the urge to go running or cycling, One step after another... further...further... away from this madhouse

A Little Promise

Just to remind myself that,

Even if I've gotten over you, I'll still treat you the same way I do now( the good way),

To make up for everything I do now,

And because, you are still my friend =)

A Liitle Good Luck to Get Me By

Could there actually be time to sit back and think over whether to continue?

Shouldn't our minds be made up already?

It's either do or don't.

I made my decision.

And I am pretty sure I'm certain about it.

No turning back =).

Now this is the post that's for YOU

Haha, just so you know, I already intended on writing about you even before that SMS, as a token to all the people who have inspired me, in one way or another. And sorry la, I told you it would be a poem but I can't think right now =S.

Honestly, I really got touched when I received that sms, though not to the point of tears la (almost!). I won't break that easily and I know you won't too ;).

Thank you.

For everything.

For when you trusted me,

When you abandoned work to chat with me ^^

For scolding me,

For advising me,

For sharing(what you could) with me,

I forgive you for whatever you hid btw =P,

For telling me to believe in myself,

For being concerned about me,

For humouring me =),

For forgiving me,

For smiling at me( I smile back too right! ? =D)

For taking time to read whatever I wrote,

For just being you,

And of course,

For believing in me. =)

You know, what you thought mattered a lot to me. You were one person I would never want to disappoint. I always tried to get things done for you. Just to not see you disappointed. I guess, I look up to you. Haha.

The sad thing is , our talks, our lives were only revolved around that one thing. And now that you're gone, I hope that any form of status is removed, and we would be equals, good friends =).
And that one time, we might be able to have a true conversation..In REAL life. No more work for once.

I hope you don't lose faith in yourself. Know that you ARE a talented person, and like you told me, no matter what others think or do, in the end it all comes down to you. I don't know what issues you are facing now but I believe you will pull through, you always do. I believe in you. And give a true smile for once. Your smiles seem like sad ones recently =(.

Don't pressure yourself so much. ><

And honestly, I still want my answers, I mean I'm still curious. But I guess ignorance is appropriate, not for bliss but just because it's better this way.

I just want you to know, I will support you ^^. Even if it's not WE, you will still have ME. So, if you're feeling lost and need a place to go, this blog, my handphone and me, myself in person, would always welcome your presence.

You, are my inspiration.

And, I hope to be the same for you.

Thank you, once again, for everything. =)
